Temperature Sensor

Automotive temperature sensors, represented by coolant temperature sensors, are the core perception components of vehicle thermal management and electronic control systems. They undertake real-time temperature monitoring of key vehicle components, provide accurate data support for ECU and VCU control strategies, and realize closed-loop intelligent control of vehicle heat dissipation and temperature regulation. They are indispensable basic sensors for traditional fuel vehicles and new energy vehicles.

Structural Composition

The automotive coolant temperature sensor is mainly composed of thermistor induction chip, high-precision packaging shell, waterproof and corrosion-resistant sealing structure, signal transmission wire harness and vehicle connector. The core sensing element is the thermistor chip, whose resistance value changes linearly with temperature fluctuation. The sensor converts physical temperature signals into standard electrical signals, and transmits them to the vehicle electronic control unit to complete real-time temperature monitoring and data feedback.

Application

The sensor collects temperature signals of coolant, battery, drive motor, electronic control module and other key components, and feeds accurate data to ECU and VCU. The vehicle control system adjusts water pump speed, valve opening and cooling fan power according to real-time temperature data, realizing precise control of heat dissipation, low-temperature preheating and constant temperature maintenance. It is widely used in the thermal management closed-loop system of ICE, HEV and BEV vehicles.

Manufacturing Challenges

The key manufacturing difficulty lies in the temperature measurement accuracy and linearity control of thermistor chips. The full-temperature-range acquisition error needs to be strictly controlled to avoid data deviation. The packaging and sealing process must adapt to harsh engine bay environments, with high temperature resistance, waterproof and anti-corrosion performance. The signal harness needs professional anti-interference design to prevent signal drift caused by vehicle EMC interference. The chip must maintain stable parameters after long-term high and low temperature cycling aging, without performance attenuation. In addition, batch production consistency needs strict process control.

Required Quality Documents

IATF16949 quality system certification, APQP development documents, DFMEA and PFMEA risk analysis, production control plan, full set of PPAP files, temperature accuracy calibration report, high and low temperature durability test report, IP waterproof and dustproof grade test report, EMC anti-interference verification report, aging life test report and material compliance certificates.

Impact on Vehicle Performance

Temperature sensors are the perceptual core of vehicle thermal management system. Slight data deviation will cause misjudgment of thermal management control strategies, resulting in insufficient preheating in low-temperature environment and delayed heat dissipation in high-temperature environment, which reduces battery cruising range and causes motor power derating. Complete sensor failure will lead to thermal management system out of control, trigger high-temperature damage of power components and vehicle fault alarm, seriously affecting vehicle power stability, driving comfort and driving safety.
